Mehen

Mehen

We worked on a collaboration with Pandora games to design and produce a contemporary version of the ancient Egyptian game of Mehen. This game was very popular for a long period of time - there are many images painted depicting groups of people playing the game and several stone game boards have survived. Interestingly, the game disappeared from the record, for reasons no one is certain of. While many artifacts exist, no one knows definitively how the game was played. There are known facts unique to the game, such as it was the only game to use a spiral game board geometry and it was the only game known to be playable by more than 2 people. Studying the archeological record, game designer Zach Horton developed a rule set for Mehen that varying from any other scholarly attempt, taking into account its unique features, such as the spiral geometry, and considering how these might have been contributed to rules, strategy and game play. The result is a truly fun and challenging game. We produced a limited edition version of this game that was distributed through a successful Kickstarter campaign. There are plans for future game collaborations with Zach and Pandora Games, and a possible second edition of Mehen. These may become future additions to the Sprialbound.design shop!
